Greater
Miami Neighborhoods, Inc.
Greater Miami Neighborhoods (GMN) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Its
mission is to increase the supply of safe, decent affordable housing for low-
and very low-income families. Since its inception, GMN has evolved into an established,
leading edge, entrepreneurial organization known for its technical expertise
in the financial structuring of complex affordable housing developments, and
for the development of creative and innovative financial products.
History
Greater Miami Neighborhoods, Inc. (GMN) was established in 1985, with a local
board of directors, as the first field office of The
Enterprise Foundation. The organization was founded as a partnership
between the private and public sectors. GMN's original role was as an intermediary
organization providing technical and financial assistance to other non-profit
organizations in the areas of organizational capacity building and affordable
housing development. The development focus during these early years was on expanding
homeownership opportunities.
In 1990, the Board of Directors of Greater Miami Neighborhoods made the decision
to expand the role of GMN from that of intermediary organization and technical
assistance provider, to include the role of project developer. By expanding GMN's
role to include that of developer, it enabled the organization to drive the production
process. Coinciding with this expanded role was the increasing opportunity to
undertake rental housing development using the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit,
and the housing crisis resulting from the destruction of Hurricane Andrew in
1992.
